Take a Different Road

Summer allows for a shift of pace and activities, which gave me a little time to think about the metaphorical roads we choose to traverse as individuals and companies.  People and companies that attain goals tend to be planners. Strategic assessment of options, advantages and disadvantages are factored into implemented actions.  However, what happens when the best plan fails? There are so many reasons plans don’t pan out the way we anticipate.  We like to think we have control, when in fact, so much is out of our control. It can be demoralizing for progress to be halted, particularly if much effort has been expended.

For a moment, I invite you to consider times when you were forced to take a different road than you originally anticipated. In my cultural tradition, we have an expression, “delay is not denial”, translation, just because things don’t work the way you originally intended your dream is still possible. It just might take longer and require different strategies. When I think about my career, there were many times when a different road yielded benefits, lessons, and relationships that would have alluded me otherwise.  I invite you to embrace the notion that your current brick wall may provide an opportunity to take a different road. Who knows, it might hold just the adventure you need.
